If this was STL i was there and the transition from “last leaf on the tree” to “roll me up and smoke me when i die” did in fact make me cry at the willie nelson show!!! Also we spent $42 on a beer, a pretzel, and a little tube of ice cream </3
You got out easy! This was indeed the STL show. Willie remains a master of the setlist and continues to put on an incredible show. Thanks for checking this one out.
Great piece. Poignant and hilarious—a nice approach to writing about Willie and the demise of the Outlaw Festival scene. It is sad that Willie is dying in front of us. Reminds me a bit of Garcia’s downhill run in the 90’s minus the heroin, of course. Keep the posts coming my man. I dig your work.
This is easily my favorite substack I read. Great stuff, man.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Ian!

Oh, wow. What a tribute to an iconic musician.
I can't believe there are only two other comments here before mine. This was so touching. A "last great shared American tradition" indeed!
Thanks for reading this one Jennifer! If you have the chance to catch him soon, please go and do it.

Mangrove! Thanks so much for checking this one out and for the kind words. Your work continues to be a guidepost in my Deaddom. Wave that flag!
